The Giftbox UK Ltd is a family run company, formed in 2003 initially in answer to a need to provide a sensitive way to help bereaved parents come to terms with the loss of a baby or child.

Patricia, a neonatal nurse for over 25 years, has been the inspiration behind the formation of the Giftbox. Through her interaction with bereaved parents, she could see firsthand how devastating it is to lose a child. The belongings of a child would be handed over to the parents in a grey plastic bag. Although nothing can replace the loss of a child, she felt that the parents deserved something better than a grey plastic bag in which to hold their treasured memories. She soon set about thinking of a way she could create a better option. She began discussing her thoughts with other members of her family and very soon the idea of a memento box began. Her idea expanded to include the creation of a separate memento box for babies that would be given up for adoption or fostering.

The whole family then set about designing a suitable box that would hold those precious mementoes for bereaved families, or a collection of memories for babies going for adoption or fostering. After several design options, mock-ups, trial runs and market research, the Comfort Box was created. By changing the picture design on top of the box, the Comfort Box could be tailored for specific uses.

Working in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit requires a special kind of person. The lives of tiny babies fighting for life are in the hands of the NICU nurses, and these nurses also become the support team for the parents or carers of the babies.

We are proud that our product can contribute in a small way to both the bereavement care that these nurses provide to bereaved parents, and in helping to build precious memories for babies being adopted or going into foster care.
